HOSPITAL EDUCATION PROGRAM

 

EDUCATIONAL CONSULTANT

 

 

Qualifications

 

  • Master’s Degree in Education
  • Valid teacher’s certificate with endorsement in major area of special education
  • Minimum of two years successful public school teaching or                           comparable experience

Primary Responsibilities

 

¦ Act as a liaison between the family, the school, and the clinic

  • Explain the role of the educational consultant as a source of information to parents, guardians or surrogates, school, clinic and medical personnel, and other stakeholders.
  • Attend school meetings at the request of the home school division, parents, guardians, or surrogates, and with the express permission of the director/supervisor. It is not appropriate to function as an advocate for the student, parents, guardians, or surrogates or to be a voting member of any home school division meeting.
  • Provide parents, guardians, or surrogates, as well as clinic and ancillary personnel, with information on current educational regulations and school policies and practices that relate to the provision of services for students with special needs.
  • Assist in the development of procedures that facilitate the gathering of background information related to the student’s school performance.
  • Maintain current documentation with respect to permission/exchange of information from parents, guardians, or surrogates.

 

¦ Assess the child’s developmental/educational needs, strengths, and weaknesses

  • Assess the student’s developmental and/or educational needs, strengths, and challenges through:
    1. Administration of formal or informal measures, including standardized assessments and/or informal observation (use of an instrument or tool to measure or record data required);
    2. Data collection in a setting outside the clinic (including but not limited to pre-school and school) using a written report, standardized checklists, behavior checklists, rating scales, task analysis, etc.       
  • Disseminate and interpret the results of formal and informal educational assessments that have been administered by the consultant, including recommendations to parents, guardians, or surrogates and medical, clinical, and/or ancillary personnel. 
  • Provide home school division personnel with information that underscores the impact of the student’s medical/educational status on his or her academic functioning and attendance.    

                   

¦ Monitor the child’s current status and needs

  • Review records (including but not limited to previous assessments, school reports, work samples, and available school records) to determine the student’s present level of academic functioning, learning patterns, and response to established practices. Use this information to direct further inquiry, observation, or evaluation. 
  • Provide medical and clinic personnel with insight into the student’s educational background and ongoing school performance as well as attendance. 
  • Maintains an organized file of each student reporting database.

 

¦ Serve as a resource to parents, schools, agencies, and the clinic

  • Develop appropriate recommendations based on the results of completed assessment(s);
  1. Referral to the School Based team;
  2. Description of an appropriate learning environment but NOT a specific placement recommendation;
  3. Identification of appropriate instructional strategies given the child’s learning style and strengths.
  • Assists with the procedure for homebound instruction.

 

¦ Serve as a member of the clinic team, when appropriate

  • Function as part of the clinics multidisciplinary teams by supporting an interdisciplinary family-centered team approach.

 

¦ Perform all other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Conducted by the Education Director according to procedures established by the Charlottesville City School system.
