The Special Education Teachers are responsible for ensuring that students achieve mastery of learning objectives. They provide guidance, instruction and support, manage the learning process and focus on students’ individual needs. Teachers monitor student progress through interactive lessons, providing specially designed instruction, and actively working with students & parents to advance each child’s learning.


Provide Special Education services in accordance with the IEP and state regulations; submit required reports and documentation to administration
Demonstrate knowledge of specialized methodology for teaching students with disabilities; Demonstrate knowledge of specialized curriculum
Demonstrate knowledge of Assistive Technologies
Facilitate IEP Teams for students with special needs
Write and Implement student IEP; Monitor and report progress toward IEP Goals and Objectives; conduct assessments as needed for special education eligibility
Compile and Maintain Special Education Compliance Files and maintain accurate special education records; keep detailed documentation from parent/student conferences
Complete all activities required for compliance with IDEA
Demonstrate thorough knowledge of ORVA/K12 policies and procedures
Support students and parents with student placement, curriculum, and instructional issues
Respond within 24 hours to student, parent, and ORVA staff inquiries via phone and/or e-mail during the regular work week
Alert administrators of any concerns about student progress and/or truancy
Work with the administration to prepare students for standardized tests (including the logistics of selecting testing sites); serve as proctors for site-based proctored standardized testing (Travel to site may be required)
Support ORVA administrators with school information sessions
Meet evaluation domain expectations
Implement all of the ORVA teacher daily, weekly, monthly and yearly expectations and tasks
Participate in all required staff meetings, monthly face to face meetings and as requested.
Statewide and overnight travel
Working in a collaborative team environment
Maintain confidentiality of online, and paper student records
Ability to maintain and use electronic file management , and collaboration systems
Other duties as assigned

Behind the Scenes
A Day in the Life

Are you driven by excellence to deliver instruction, support and guidance, manage the learning process, and focus on students’ individual needs? If selected, you will participate in a comprehensive new teacher training program for three weeks before the start of school. It is an opportunity to meet colleagues and learn the responsibilities required for delivering curriculum in an online environment. During this training you will also learn how to monitor student progress through K12’s learning management system, and to be a partner actively working with students and parents to advance each child’s learning.


Minimum six (6) months teaching experience
Bachelor’s degree
Appropriate State certification
Meets state’s NCLB’s Highly Qualified Teacher requirements
Proficient in MS Excel, Word, and Outlook
Strong written/verbal communication skills
Ability to travel at least once per month within and between assigned geographic areas to support students, attend regularly scheduled meetings, and participate in school activities, open houses and orientations.
Experience working with the proposed age group
Experience supporting adults and children in the use of technology
An ability to learn new technology tools quickly (e.g., database and web-based tools)


Experience working in a virtual environment.
Ability to quickly learn new technologies and tools
Experience teaching online (virtual) and/or in a brick-and-mortar environment
Familiar with Blackboard Collaborative or other online platforms
