Assistant Director of Transportation and Grounds

Job Description


Purpose: Complete range of curricular and extra-curricular activities offered by the district’s schools.   Assists in operating a safe and efficient transportation operation that transports students to and from schools and to participate in school activities. Assists in maintaining the physical exterior of the District facilities and accompanying grounds in a condition of operating excellence, safety, cleanliness, and aesthetic attractiveness.


Reports To: Director of Transportation and Grounds



  1. Associates Degree in Business or related field with five years related experience and/or training in the area of Transportation which provides the required leadership, knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
  2. Demonstrated aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities.
  3. Possess valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with required endorsements.
  4. Meet all State requirements for Bus Drivers, including Defensive Driving, and First Aid Certification.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge in areas such as grounds keeping, landscaping, and equipment operation.
  6. Be able to pass initial and random tests for alcohol and controlled substances.
  7. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.


Essential Functions:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

  1. Assists the Director in developing and administering a transportation program to meet all the requirements of the daily instructional program and extracurricular activities.
  2. Assists the Director in preparing bus routes to serve the students in the district that are convenient yet economically feasible.
  3. Assists the Director in preparing and updating bus schedules for the District.
  4. Ability to operate and maintain all District-owned vehicles and equipment, to preventive maintenance plans.
  5. Assists the Director in maintaining safety standards in compliance with state and insurance regulations and develops a program of preventive safety.
  6. Cooperates with principals and others responsible for planning special school trips.
  7. Works with the principals and drivers in solving discipline problems occurring on school buses.
  8. Conforms to all state laws and regulations regarding school transportation.
  9. Assists the Director in developing recommendations for future equipment and personnel needs based on enrollment projections.
  10. Maintains bus driver qualifications needed for bus driver job description.
  11. Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information.
  12. Performs such other related duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation and Grounds, CFO, or Superintendent.
  13. Assists in determining which repair and new construction projects are beyond the scope of the District staff and which must be performed by outside contractors and advises the CFO accordingly.
  14. Examines the school grounds on a regular basis for needed repair and maintenance.
  15. Responsible for exterior maintenance work such as repairing fencing, asphalt, playground, etc.
  16. Coordinates with the Director on ordering or bidding of materials as needed and makes recommendations for supplies and equipment for purchase.
  17. Follows a regular plan of preventive maintenance as established by the Director.
  18. Supervises other crew members in a variety of tasks as assigned by the Director.
  19. Performs various yard-keeping chores and ground maintenance duties as assigned by the Director.
  20. Performs various painting chores as assigned by the Director.
  21. Assists other personnel in emergency situations as called upon.
  22. Assumes duties of Director of Transportation and Grounds in the absence of the Director.

  4. Must work indoors, outdoors and in all weather conditions.
  5. Must work in and around dust, fumes, and odors.
  6. Ability to lift 50 pounds.
