TITLE School Bus Driver

REPORTS TO Director of Transportation

FLSA STATUS Non-Exempt

NATURE OF WORK
The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that
employee will encounter while performing the essential functions of this position:
While performing the duties of a school bus driver, the employee is frequently exposed to
outside weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, traffic and
other unpredictable road conditions, and vibration. The employee will have frequent
interaction with children, including children with disabilities who may need specific
transportation-related accommodations. The employee may have occasional exposure to
blood, bodily fluids, and tissue. The noise level in the work environment is generally
moderate to loud. The employee will be frequently subject to tight pick-up and drop-off
schedules, short notice of route assignments and changes, extreme temperature and
weather conditions, driving during hours of darkness, disruptive student-passengers, and
frequent stops.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The information contained in this job description is a summary of the essential job functions
of this position; it is not an exhaustive list of the duties and responsibilities which must be
performed for this position:
1. Drive and operate any make and model of school bus in transportation fleet.
2. Perform functions necessary to transport students and authorized personnel safely to
and from school or other designated locations in accordance with route sheet
instructions.
3. Conduct required daily safety inspections of buses, reports mechanical malfunctions
and other problems as required; prepare and maintain related records.
4. Maintain discipline on the bus. Enforce rules related to student conduct on the school
bus, and report violations of the conduct rules as required.
5. Clean buses daily and assures that all safety devices are in place and in good
condition. Use proper technique for cleaning and disposing of human fluids.
6. Promote good public relations through personal appearance, attitude, conversation,
and the safe and professional operation of a school bus. Contact parents/guardians
as necessary regarding conditions on the bus and the conduct of their children.
7. Serve as a liaison between students and school administrators by reporting conditions
that would jeopardize transportation safety.
8. Observe legal and defensive driving practices; assure compliance with applicable
traffic and student transportation laws, codes, and regulations. Obey all traffic laws.
9. Operate and properly secure equipment required to support transportation of students
with disabilities and special needs.
10. Transport only authorized students and personnel. Discharge students only at
authorized stops.
11. Determine appropriate action in emergency situations according to established
guidelines and, if possible, administer first-aid to passengers.
12. Maintain confidentiality of student information.
13. Utilize two-way radios for bus-to-bus and bus-to-base communications. Promptly
report all accidents, injuries and delays to appropriate personnel. Meet scheduled
departure times, and prepares related logs and reports.
14. Attend bus driver meetings and in-service trainings to improve and maintain skills.
15. Submit all reports and time sheets in a timely manner as required by the department.
16. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.
17. Employees must perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be able to pass a State Department of Education prescribed medical examination
and, upon request, provide such additional certification as may be necessary to
establish that the driver is physically qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle
under the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986 and implementing regulations.
- Must possess a Georgia Commercial Driver License with an ā€œSā€ and ā€œPā€ endorsement
from the Georgia Department of Motor Vehicles.
- High School Diploma or GED preferred

PHYSICAL ABILITIES
The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an
employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position:
For their own safety and the safety of others, all school bus drivers must have adequate:
1. Strength of the skeletal muscles to manually turn a large diameter steering wheel (20-
24 inches) rapidly, to maintain a grip on the steering wheel when confronted with tire
failures, when striking potholes, or upon encountering obstructions in the roadway; and
ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
2. Mobility of joints to reach and manipulate various controls that must be pushed, pulled,
or twisted; and to climb, bend, crawl, lift, twist, and turn to position for visual inspection
of school bus systems such as tires, brakes, suspensions, and engines.
3. Stability of joints and of the torso to maintain alert driving postures to smoothly
modulate foot and hand controls after being seated for a continuous and extended
period of time, and to climb into and out of the vehicle, and continuously remain seated
for a extended period of time.
4. Power grasp and precision pretension of hands and fingers to control a steering wheel
without power assistance, and perform various other tasks such as manipulating
knobs and switches necessary to operate devices such as light switches, directional
signals, horns, and wheelchair lifts.
5. Mobility to navigate throughout the bus in order to conduct emergency evacuation and
exit through emergency door of bus.
