Job Description

Russell Byers Charter School is seeking a CEO with a proven track record of providing strong leadership in an urban elementary setting with experience in teaching, instructional coaching, fiscal and administrative oversight, and legal/risk management. The successful candidates vision must be both progressive and creative, with a collaborative, inspirational leadership style that is rooted in accountability. The CEO must possess a proven ability to lead in a fast-paced school expansion environment, with the ability to effectively communicate internally and externally, and have demonstrated success in nurturing relationships with multiple stakeholders.


Future Vision & Opportunities for CEO

Oversee RBCS Middle School Expansion

The CEO will be responsible for successfully leading RBCS through the current school expansion from its current K4-7th grade structure to a K4-8 school over the next three years.

Support the creation of a more comprehensive and well-measured approach to developing the whole child. The CEO must be able to provide oversight in the institution of a Learning Framework that fits the unique Russell Byers culture, one that embraces the whole child and uses good data to inform decision making, over the next five years.

Support and advise on the establishment of a learning model that aligns with RBCS commitment and philosophy of educating the whole child. This will require a CEO who possesses a strong leader competence, with demonstrated ability in developing high-performing teams through collaboration and accountability. Ensuring high levels of leader coaching, teacher support, development, and overall retention are key to the learning model's success.

Build a detailed, well-articulated strategy for stakeholder engagement. In order for RBCS to realize its mission, each and every RBCS stakeholder needs to be engaged and feel like their voices are heard. The CEO will need to articulate a strategy for building partnerships and communicating with a diverse set of stakeholders - e.g., families, partners, board members and funders, while encouraging the leadership team to do the same.

Build a strong operational framework for overall school management. To ensure smooth, efficient, and effective school operations of the newly expanded school, it is imperative that the CEO provides solid, consistent oversight in the development and management of systems and processes, including but not limited to: administrative and financial management, fundraising/development, legal and risk mitigation, as well as reporting and compliance.

Overview of Roles and Responsibilities

Russell Byers Charter School is currently in a mode of expansion and will grow to 725 students over the next three years. The CEO will be responsible for leading current and future expansion efforts, as well as providing ongoing oversight of all school operations.

The CEO will work with a leadership team comprised of a Principal, Director of Teaching and Learning, Director of Special Education, Director of Technology, Director of Operations, Administrator for Students and Families, and an Ours For Life Coordinator. The CEO will report to the Board of Trustees and will be responsible for all facets of the school including:

Championing the vision of the school.
Ensuring effective use of the learning framework to drive instruction and culture.
Managing the leadership team to meet all performance goals of the school.
Leading communications and maintaining relationships with all constituencies.
Managing financial functions (budgets, vendor contracts, personnel, etc.).
Overseeing facilities management (property, security).
Overseeing all human capital and human resources functions.
Building relationships with RBCS partners and community (local media, charter partners, external affiliates providing services to our students).
Maintaining a positive relationship with the School District of Philadelphia.
Complying and managing all regulatory and legal matters, as well as risk mitigation efforts.
Supporting development activities is a key accountability for the role.

    • Professional Qualifications

      Principal or Superintendent certification required.
      Experience working for an organization or program focused on the “whole child”.
      Skilled educational administrator, with strong leader competence and demonstrated business management experience, including oversight of finances, facilities, legal and risk management, and personnel matters.
      Strategic thinker with the ability to oversee daily operations, holding self and others accountable to desired outcomes.
      Experience working in a multi-faceted organization.
      Exceptional communication skills across diverse audiences.
      Experience working collaboratively with a board.
      Teaching experience (especially in elementary grades) preferred.
      Demonstrated experience in Special Education preferred.
      Experience working in an urban school (charter school preferred).
      Fundraising experience preferred.
