JOB DESCRIPTION: .5 Librarian, Collins Middle School, 2017-2018


REPORTS TO: Building Principal


SUPERVICES: Paraprofessional(s) who comprise the school library staff, and, if applicable, volunteers, and students assistants.



  • To ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information.
  • To empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information.
  • To instill a love of learning in all students and ensure equitable access to


  • To collaborative with classroom teachers to design and implement units if instruction, and to assess student learning.
  • To align the School Library Program (SLP) with the mission, goals, and objectives of the school/school district.




  1. Learning and Teaching
  • Partner with teachers in the instructional process by planning lessons and assignments that lead to use of library resources.
  • Collaborate with teachers to design, teach, assess learning that incorporates inquiry learning, information literacies in different formats, and critical thinking.
  • Teach students how to do independent reference work and develop skills in the use of reference materials in relation to planned assignments.
  • Promote the ethical use of information: copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property.
  • Promote a love of reading and life long learning.


  1. Information Access including collecting development
  • Evaluate, select, requisition and maintain resources in different formats appropriate to the curriculum, learners, and instructional strategies of the school.
  • Assist teachers in the selection of books and other instructional materials, and make library materials available to supplement the instructional program.
  • Inform teachers and other staff members concerning new materials that the library acquires.
  • Maintain comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all library materials, and instructs teachers and students on use if the system.
  • Maintain school library’s webpage and online resources.


  1. Program Administration and library Management
  • Foster a creative, flexible environment so that the school library is essential part of the learning community.
  • Supervise IMC routines for the smooth operation of the library.
  • Promote appropriate conduct of students using library facilities.
  • Supervise library aides in the performance of their duties.
  • Prepare and administer the library budget.


  1. Technology
  • Evaluate and promote existing and emerging instructional technologies to support teaching ad improve leaning.
  • Facilitates implementation of school initiatives, such as 1:1 chrome book environment and technology-supported inquiry-based learning.
  • Provides direct assistance and support with technological tools and resources to students and teachers.
  • Collaborates with teachers and staff to assist with and support best practices in the use of the instructional technology.


  1. Leadership
  • Serves on decision-making teams, school improvement activities, presents at meetings.
  • Stays current in professional practices, educational research; maintains active professional memberships.
  • Collects and analyzes data to improve instruction; demonstrates correlation between the SLP and students achievement.


Additional duties as assigned.



Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.

Licensed as a School Librarian or Unified Media Specialist (all grades) by the Massachusetts Department of Education, or in the process of licensure.

Current authorization to work in the United States.
