Job Description

The Wediko School is a leading residential treatment center that offers clinical and educational services for boys ages 11-21. The Wediko School provides an exciting, challenging, and rewarding opportunity to work with a dedicated, hardworking, multidisciplinary team of experts. The Residential Counselor is responsible for establishing a safe and therapeutic environment for our students in which they will be able to identify their strengths, develop and practice new skills, and actualize their hopes and dreams. Develop skills working for a human services agency while making a difference in the lives of others. Successful candidate will be able to establish relationships with our students while maintaining professional boundaries. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required. The Residential Counselor must have a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Mental Health, or other related discipline; or no less than 2 years of experience working with adolescents in a residential setting. Weekend and Vacation Residential Counselors work Friday 4:00 pm through Sunday 3:00 pm and during Wediko School vacations. Asleep overnight opportunities during this shift are available but not required. There are both Full Time and Per Diem positions available.

Job Summary:
The Connections Per Diem Residential Counselor is responsible for maintaining the safety (physical and psychological) of the students in the clinical milieu, providing day-to-day care of students’ basic needs, assisting with integrating of appropriate therapeutic interventions based on the individual student’s clinical issues, and supporting the students in meeting dorm and setting behavioral expectations. The Connections Per Diem Residential Counselor works and communicates with the Connections Supervisor, Connections Residential Counselor, dorm Supervisor and dorm Lead staff to ensure the safety and structures of the program are implemented and student successes and struggles are monitored, and to ensure all students have an opportunity to build on social skills and increase their ability to improve their emotional regulation by running inherently interesting activities within the milieu for students to participate in daily.

Minimum Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in an educational or human service field of study.
• Strong communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
• Respond positively and appropriately to direction and feedback.

Essential Functions:
Implementing Individual Treatment Plans (ITP) for a group of children on a day-to-day basis. This will include:
• Providing regular individual supervision of children using various tools such as group checklists, daily logs, etc.
• Maintaining daily logs, tracking students’ behavior, documenting critical incidents and health watch logs.
• Providing educational and therapeutic experiences for each individual child in accordance with the Individual Treatment Plan (ITP.)
• Crisis management of students with critical incident reporting.
• Overseeing the daily physical and psychological safety issues with children.
• Maintaining an age-appropriate balance of limit setting, giving directions and nurturing on an on-going basis.
• Participating in weekly group meeting sessions with students.
• Assisting with integrating appropriate individual student clinical issues. This will include dorm follow through on all programming, experiential learning activities, and pre-vocational activities.
• Overseeing, monitoring and providing the day-to-day care of students’ basic needs such as:
? Mealtimes and nutrition
? Bedtime routines and overnights
? Personal hygiene and self-care
? Weekend and break recreation
? Upkeep of all living spaces in dorms and chores
• Providing transportation from one activity to another, and between Wediko, home, local districts or appointments as needed.
• Providing and facilitating transition staffing from one area of programming to another, in compliance with IEP and ITP objectives (Coverage to Connections Program and Connections Program to Evening Program).
• Communicating with Awake Overnights, Clinical Supervisors, Lead Staff, Residential Counselors and Assistant Teachers about student progress, struggles and needs.
• Completion of and adherence to the assigned Restrictive Behavioral Intervention training protocol.
Performing any other duties required by the Clinical Supervisor.

Wediko clinicians work closely with the student’s family and referring professional with the goal of returning the child to his home and community, or a less restrictive school, as soon as possible.

    Wediko works with students who are struggling with complex psychiatric profiles and disruptive behaviors. Often, students do not fit neatly under the criteria of a specific diagnosis or they have been diagnosed with multiple disorders, including, but not limited to, the following:

    • Abilities Required:
      Must have the ability to work in a physically active work place and initiate and participate in the Wediko Behavior Management System including Restrictive Behavioral Interventions. Satisfactory completion of CPI training required. Possessing a clean driver’s license is desirable.
