Redirect Academic Tutor

Job Goal: Redirect is a classroom based program which provides individualized support and monitoring to students who would benefit from additional support and structure within Somerville High School. Students are enrolled in Redirect for a semester or year and have time in their schedules to complete school work. Students receive support in staying on top of academic work, completing outstanding assignments, communicating with their teachers and developing increased self-efficacy. Redirect is meant to be flexible to respond to the changing needs of students and help support them in a variety of academic, organizational, and social emotional ways.

The tutor would work up to fifteen (15) hours/week to be determined by the current needs of the Redirect program.

• Comfortable and proficient with high school Math and Science curriculum (Algebra 1, 2, Geometry, Advanced Math, Pre-Calculus, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science)
• Able to collaborate with Redirect students’ teachers to support their academic success (e.g. collecting homework, negotiating deadlines, facilitating relationships between teachers)
• Willingness to help with other academic subjects although no expertise or special knowledge is required or expected

Qualifications and Skills Preferred:
• Active and valid MA DESE (Mathematics and/or Science) preferred
• Experience working with high school students
• Excellent interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with school staff and students
• Ability to build relationships with all types of learners
• Flexible and able to switch gears quickly

Position Reports to: School Counseling Director in collaboration with Redirect Counselor
