OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION

The Head Custodian will provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clan, and efficient place in which to learn, play, and develop.

The successful candidate for this position will provide leadership and guidance for other custodial staff as well as occasional workers/contractors who provide construction or maintenance services to our schools.

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Possesses knowledge of District policies and regulations relating to areas of responsibilities.
  2. Performs all the tasks and responsibilities of regular custodial staff as needed.
  3. Plans, schedules, trains, supervises, and inspects the work of other custodians assigned to the building site.
  4. Assists principal in the recruitment and evaluation of other custodial staff as requested.
  5. Provides direction and instructions for using new tools, methods, and equipment in building operations and maintenance.
  6. Prepares cost estimates and budget requests.
  7. Orders supplies, parts, and materials.
  8. Implements energy conservation policies and practices.
  9. Plans and prepares buildings and grounds for seasonal changes.
  10. Manages HVAC operations and equipment.
  11. Prepares and presents written and/or oral presentations as requested.
  12. Shares techniques and materials required in school custodial care and preventative maintenance program with administration and staff as requested.
  13. Manages and maintains all building equipment in accordance with its purpose and function.
  14. Maintains supply and inventory records.
  15. Ensures safe handling and disposal of all chemicals and other solutions related to building and grounds maintenance.
  16. Acts as the custodian of District vehicles and other equipment and machinery (including lawnmowers, weed eaters, generators, and the like) and ensure proper and timely maintenance.
  17. Oversees the maintenance of school grounds and surrounding areas.
  18. Works cooperatively with students, parents, staff, and community members to project a positive, service-oriented demeanor.
  19. Serves as an active member of the safety committee.
  20. Coordinates annual State and District testing (i.e. sprinkler systems, asbestos, water, etc.).
  21. Works with site administrators to plan, priorities, and implement holiday and seasonal cleaning and repair schedules.
  22. Reports and responds to all building or District emergencies, including inclement weather situations, as requested or required.
  23. Promotes and works cooperatively on building recycling programs.
  24. Coordinates, reviews, and monitors performance of contractors and vendors related to the facilities.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Attends staff meetings and/or serves on committees as requested (i.e. Safety Committee).
  2. Maintains professional competence through participation in District provided in-service activities and/or self-selected professional growth activities related to job responsibilities.
  3. Performs other duties as assigned.

OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Valid Oregon Driver’s License and excellent driving record required
  2. FBI fingerprint clearance required
  3. Required health training: valid First Aid/CPR-AED cards, blood-borne pathogen, and Epi-pen training.
  4. Genuine enjoyment of working with students and adults in a school setting
  5. Outstanding communication skills – both oral and written – that are effective across a wide variety of audiences, including students, parents, and staff
  6. Maintains job appropriate and professional attire
  7. General knowledge of communication tools, including but not limited to phone systems, email, and the like. Additional skills in working with word processing and Excel spreadsheets may be required for various reporting and scheduling tasks.
  8. Technical competencies, including clerical, maintenance, landscaping, and the like

EDUCATION/VOCATIONAL PREPARATION

High School Diploma – additional college coursework preferred.  Experience working with students in a school setting is preferred.  Experience as a custodian in a school setting or related environment is preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Moderate degree to extensive of physical stamina with occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds.  Ability to lift furniture, desks, shelving, staging, and cleaning supplies and equipment. Frequent and prolonged standing, walking, and bending.  Ability to climb ladders, stretch and bend to perform such duties as cleaning, repairing, painting, cleaning roofs, gutters and drains, and general maintenance.  Ability to move freely around the school building and grounds.  Exposure to outdoor weather conditions.  Exposure to chemicals, dirt, dust, and paint.  Exposure to noise and activity levels associated with school life.

ASSIGNMENT/TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Evaluation: Evaluated annually by Site Principal with oversight by Business Manager

Salary and fringe benefits will be approved annually by the School Board.
