Job Description

POSITION TITLE: Special Education Teacher

REPORTS TO: Principal and/or Director of Special Education

SUMMARY: Teacher of a substantially separate classroom responsible for developing special education students' success in academics, interpersonal skills and activities of daily living; supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from students’ parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress.


1. Understands and delivers curriculum area, including determining appropriate entry levels of MA Curriculum Frameworks

2. Adapts classroom work for the purpose of providing students with instructional materials that address individualized education programs (IEPs)

3. Develops and understands all IEP processes and procedures

4. Administers developmental testing programs, subject specific assessments, etc. for the purpose of assessing student levels, reporting progress, and/or developing IEPs

5. Ability for MCAS Alternative Assessment Submission

6. Strong ability to collaborate with all constituents, including related service providers, as well as instructional assistants

7. Establishes strong communication with parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of communicating expectations; student's achievements; developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment

8. Knowledge of Assistive Technology for communication

9. Experience developing ABA programs and their implementation

10. Knowledge of de-escalation techniques and restraint procedures for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment

11. Participates in a variety of meetings, including IEPs, for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions

12. Prepares a variety of necessary documents (e.g., adaptive materials, grades, attendance, anecdotal records, IEPs, behavior logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements

13. Reports incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to state and federal laws and district policies

14. Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal or Director of Special Education

      2. Certified in Moderate and/or Intensive Special Needs

      3. Restraint experienced beneficial

      4. Must be Wilson Certified
    • At least 1 year of relevant experience preferred
    • Bachelor degree preferred
