Mission Statement Brunswick School Libraries: The mission of the school library program is to prepare students and staff to become effective users of information and foster an interest in reading and lifelong learning.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Certified Library Media Specialist (K-12) by the Maine Department of Education

 

JOB GOAL: The Library Media Specialist is responsible for the management, administration and operation of the library facility and programs.

 

The School Library Media specialist is responsible for providing the leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the library operates in an efficient and effective manner and that the program is an integral part of the curriculum in keeping with the instructional goals of the school. The librarian performs the following overlapping roles: Educational Leader, Manager, Planner; Teacher; and Information and Literature Specialist.

 

  1. Educational Leader, Manager, Planner
  • Leads, plans, manages and evaluates the library program and facility. 
  • Implements Brunswick School Board policies relating to libraries and technology, and ensures adherence to individual school procedures.
  • Furthers the educational goals of the school and the district by serving on decision-making teams, professional committees, and participating in clubs and other relevant activities. 
  • Promotes and communicates the mission, goals and procedures of the school library program to students, faculty, staff, administration, and the community.
  • Directs, organizes, supervises and evaluates the personnel and services essential to the effective and efficient functioning of the school library facility and program.       
  • Consults with, and reports to, administrators about library programs, collections, facilities, personnel and budgets.
  • Develops school library procedures.
  • Communicates with teachers and staff about district library policies, school library procedures, materials and programs.
  • Prepares reports and financial plans for the library, including an annual budget. 
  • Participates in the development of long range plans for library programs, and facilities. 
  • Develops flexible circulation, loan and use procedures that ensure equity of access to users.
  • Establishes and maintains an inviting environment in the library in which students, faculty and staff can work productively.
  • Creates displays and bulletin boards to promote the library and its programs.
  • Plans and participates in effective public relations, promotional events, outreach and communication.
  • Participates in the promotion and integration of the library media program into the curriculum. 
  • Participates in the recruiting, hiring, and training of library staff, including library assistants, student assistants, parent and community volunteers. 
  • Develops a collection of carefully selected resources to support recreational reading and the instructional goals of the school.
  • Surveys students, faculty and staff regularly to determine their reading, information, and technology needs and interests.
  • Maintains a diverse and current collection of print, audiovisual, and electronic resources by purchasing, cataloging, classifying, weeding and inventorying on a regular basis. 
  • Arranges the scheduling of the facility, library staff, equipment, and collections to meet the needs of individuals, groups, and classes.
  • Oversees the acquisition, maintenance, scheduling, and distribution of  audiovisual equipment as it applies in each school.
  • Develops and continually updates professional expertise. 
  • Networks with other professionals through participation in local, state and national meetings, conferences, and organizations.
  • Fulfills needs specific to each individual school such as managing the Brunswick High School broadcast studio, chairing library book fairs, and coordinating the spring reading challenge.

 II. Teacher

  • Instructs students in skills related to literature appreciation, research, critical thinking, and the use of information technology. 
  • Works to ensure the integration of information, information technology skills, and curricular resources throughout the school’s instructional program.
  • Caters to a wide variety of student interests, abilities, and reading levels.           
  • Plans, teaches, and reinforces instruction designed to help students, faculty and staff become engaged readers, and effective users of information.
  • Partners with teachers to promote reading and provide reading experiences for individuals, small groups and classes.
  • Promotes lifelong learning by fostering an interest and enjoyment in libraries, reading, research, and information technology.
  • Models and promotes the ethical use of information and ideas around issues of copyright, confidentiality, privacy, and intellectual freedom.
  • Reviews challenged materials in accordance with Brunswick School Board policy.
  • Provides professional development opportunities for faculty and staff.
  • Participates in district, building, department, and grade-level curricular design and assessment projects on a regular basis.        
  • Designs and implements relevant instructional activities both individually and in collaboration with teachers.

           

     III. Information and Literature Specialist

 

  • Works with students, faculty and staff to efficiently and effectively identify, locate, use, evaluate and present information and ideas.
  • Makes resources available to students and teachers through a systematically developed and organized collection of print and electronic materials, supplemented with resources available outside the school.
  • Promotes the library as the bedrock of a literate and informed community.
  • Keeps abreast of current literature by reading review journals and other collection development resources.
  • Assesses and promotes effective use of instructional technologies and literature.
  • Develops and maintains the online catalog, circulation system, and library website.
  • Uses various software and online programs, including the school’s student management system.
