Makerspace – Library Assistant



Job Goal: Assist other staff members and student patrons of the Library and Makerspace by utilizing technology to create a learning culture in which students can learn to persevere through problem-solving struggles, collaborate and innovate to develop creative solutions to real world and curriculum-based problems.


•Works under the direction of the School Library Media Specialist who issues instructions regarding work assignments and who reviews work for compliance to instructions, department rules and procedures.
•Maintains a creative, safe, organized and positive work environment for patrons in the library and Makerspace.
•This position requires the employee to plan, organize, and execute maker-related programming and raise the profile of the new Makerspace as a resource for STEAM learning.
•Works closely with the Library Media Specialist and teachers to develop and implement STEAM related programming for patrons in The Makerspace.
•Assists in the planning and presenting of diverse and creative programs for students on a regular basis.
•Teaches basic certification, safety, and training sessions covering all Makerspace equipment.
•Schedules classes, events, appointments and calendar updates for The Makerspace and Library under the direction of the Library Media Specialist
•Documents and maintains Makerspace inventory and service records.
•Maintains in-house Standard Operating Procedure documentation for commonly used materials and equipment.
•Provides formal and informal Makerspace assistance for Staff and Patrons.
•Updates, maintains, and troubleshoots equipment.
•Answers telephone and directs questions to appropriate staff members or departments, as appropriate.
•Uses library automated systems for circulation transactions used in the checking out/checking in of library materials, processing patron records, determining materials status, locating resources within the system, arranging for transfers of library materials, placing holds, registering new patrons, generating overdue notices and performing additional circulation procedures as needed.
•Processes donated and purchased materials for library catalog and circulation (labels, book covers, add records to library catalog)
•Assists in shelving library materials and helps maintain an orderly and patron-oriented collection.
•Manages and clears the book and audio-visual return drop on a regular basis.
•Supports student patrons in the use of the library, particularly how to locate materials and services and how to use them.
•Monitors and manages patron activities in the library and addresses patron behavior according to school and library policy
•Requires regular and prompt attendance plus the ability to work well with others and as a team member
•Participates in special projects
•Performs other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements:
•Must possess the mobility to work in the library and makerspace setting which includes the ability to stoop, stand, squat, stretch, climb, lift, carry, shelve and retrieve books and materials from shelves and storage locations generally not exceeding 40 pounds.

•School Year Schedule (September – June)
