Job Goal: The Somerville Center for Adult Learning Experiences (S.C.A.L.E.) is now accepting applications for the position of part-time CLS (Career and Life Skills) Teacher – Level 1. Position is available immediately. Classes are held at our current location, 167 Holland Street, Somerville, MA 02144.

 

The Career and Life Skills Teacher is responsible for preparing engaging, active, learner-centered lessons for adult immigrant students at beginning levels of English proficiency. Instruction focuses on English reading, writing, speaking, listening, vocabulary, and grammar according to the curricular guidelines of the program. Teachers follow the SCALE ELL curriculum to provide a rigorous and meaningful educational experience to meet program objectives and student goals.


The Career and Life Skills class incorporates Integrated and Contextualized learning, Problem-Based Learning, and Project -Based Learning to emphasize skills that help learners function effectively within the workforce and civic and community life (Digital Literacy, Financial Literacy, Health Literacy, Civics Education Skills, and Workplace Preparation).

 

Responsibilities:
•Plan and deliver high-quality lessons that align with the ELL Department’s Curriculum Guidelines and the MA DESE English Language Proficiency Standards. (submit one lesson plan per month).
•Attend and participate in department meetings, appropriate in-service workshops, and take advantage of professional development opportunities for continued improvement in ELL instruction and teaching strategies.
•Implement useful diagnostic and progress assessment measures to evaluate student progress and make placement recommendations as required by department policy/procedures.
•Complete attendance and assessment-related activities in compliance with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
•Work effectively with other teachers, counselor(s) and program administrators for program effectiveness and to ensure the development and growth of student knowledge and skills.
•Follow all department policy/procedures regarding the delivery of instruction, progress monitoring and placement, substitutes and substitute lesson plans, and operating procedures.
•Integrate technology into instruction.

 

Minimum Qualifications:
•Minimum of 2 years ELL classroom teaching experience
•Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of learner-centered teaching approaches and effective integrated skills activities
•Experience teaching academic skills, career readiness, college preparation
•Ability to integrate technology to enhance instruction
•Curriculum development experience desirable
•Massachusetts Teacher Certification a plus
•BEST Plus and TABE-e Reading certification is preferred but not required for this position.

 

Terms of Employment:
•Part Time: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
•9 teaching hours and 2 preparation hours per week
•Monthly meetings, 12:15pm – 1:15 p.m.
•Teaching responsibilities begin immediately and continue through the end of our second instructional cycle in May or June. (Please note that the actual end date will be determined after snow days or other cancellations.)

•Salary range is in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
