Anticipated Coordinator of K-8 Elementary Science and Social Studies Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment
SOMERVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

 

Job Goal:

The Coordinator of Elementary Science and Social Studies Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment (ECIA) works under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment (CIA) in planning, designing, implementing, and assessing the instruction program in Grades K-8 while also working with the Early Ed department and the grades 9-12 Department Heads around transition alignment.

The Coordinator of (ECIA) specific responsibilities include but are not limited to assisting the Assistant Superintendent (CIA) to:

Responsibilities:

•Provide leadership and support for Principals as they carry out their instructional leadership roles at their schools related to science and social studies.

•Coordinate and ensure the articulation of the Grades K-8 science and social studies curriculum.

•Facilitate adoption, implementation, ongoing assessment, and revision of Grades K-8 science and social studies curriculum.

•Collaborate with the Director of Equity and Excellence and the Director of Educator Development to develop a new social studies program that is a) aligned to the Massachusetts Frameworks; b) aligned to the district vision and values around equity, social justice, civic engagement, and culturally responsive curriculum; and c) leverages teacher leadership to develop and rollout high quality curriculum.

•Collaborate with the Director of Equity and Excellence to incorporate the district science curriculum that is a) aligned to the Massachusetts Frameworks; b) aligned to the district vision and values around equity, social justice, civic engagement, and culturally responsive curriculum; and c) leverages teacher leadership to develop and rollout high quality curriculum.

•Collaborate with the Director of Equity and Excellence to ensure all newly developed curriculum is aligned to the district vision and values around equity, social justice, civic engagement, and is culturally responsive.


•Work collaboratively with educators and administrators to implement the Curriculum Development Cycle with fidelity for grades K-8 social studies and science.

•Collaborate with outside partners and organizations (ex. universities, museums, community organizations, discipline specific state and national organizations) to embed rigorous and rich learning opportunities into our social studies and science curriculum.

•Coordinate development of authentic assessments and standardized test alignment for each curriculum area.

•Coordinate studies and provide committee leadership on designated goals and strategies.

•Coordinate the production and continual updating of Grade Level Guides for each curriculum area.

•Direct and coordinate the development of summer workshops in science and social studies, as well as professional development opportunities during the school year.

•Develop and implement training modules for newly hired staff to learn about the curriculum as part of their on-boarding experiences in SPS.

•Work collaboratively with MLE Director and Elementary Coordinator for Literacy and Mathematics on program development and resources to ensure language supports and enhanced literacy/math integrations are embedded in all units of study for social studies and science.

•Develop and administer the system wide curriculum science and social studies support budget, including annual orders of consumable materials for each unit of study.

•Support district and school leaders in administration of standardized tests.

•Coordinate the development and implementation of alternative student assessments and student report cards related to science and social studies.

•Prepare descriptive materials about the instructional program for the School Committee’s consideration.

•Provide technical assistance to the Superintendent and other administrators in the resolution of instructional programs.

•Carry out other responsibilities related to the administration of the schools, as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent (CIA).


Qualifications/Requirements:

•Principal experience required
•DESE Principal license required
•Experience with supervision and evaluation
•Previous teaching experience in Science and Social Studies at the K-8 level
•Curriculum development experience at the K-8 level
