Job Description
The English as a Second Language/English Language Learner Teacher provides instruction to students in the ESL/ELL Program. The goal of this position is to guide English Language Learners toward gaining proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing; and to support teachers in regular education classrooms who are working toward the same objective.

Qualifications: MA DESE licensure, understanding and experience with English language students, including developing instruction and appropriate programming for a variety of grade levels and a variety of learning styles.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Coordinate necessary student information and applicable assistive technology materials/tools
• Consult to teachers: provide in-service training, modeling and on-going support use of ELL standards.
• Effectively carry out their responsibility for the teaching and learning of ELLs as well as to understand the social and cultural issues that contribute to and impact the schooling of ELLs. Utilize natural patterns of first language learning in teaching ESL.
• Understanding and knowledge of how language functions within academic content teaching and learning, and how children and adolescents acquire a second language. Support/instill motivation and achievement of non-English-speaking students.
• Understand and practice using practical, research-based protocols, methods, and strategies to integrate subject-area content, language, and literacy development—per the expectations of the World Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) English Language Development Standards (ELDS)—and thus to support ELL students’ success with all state academic standards.
• Utilize a variety of methods of instruction (pull-out, push-in, content-based ESL, etc.).
• Act as liaison with students, parents, teachers and administration.
• Assist in administering required language proficiency and academic achievement tests (this includes all State testing), along with ongoing monitoring of student progress.
• Maintain database (spreadsheet) of ELL and ELL- eligible students, including home school communication, test data and levels of support.
• Assist in developing language acquisition support plans (ELL plans) for all ELL students and work with classroom teachers to implement plans.
