Job Description
The Burrillville School Department is seeking qualified, certified candidates for the position of Transition Learning Center Teacher beginning the 2017-2018 school year. Please read the following job description for general responsibilities and position requirements.

Position Description

Title: Transition Learning Center (TLC) Teacher

Supervisor: School Principal/ PPS Director

Department: School Department


The TLC Teacher will provide academic, social/emotional, and behavioral support to students in need of an alternative classroom setting. The TLC Teacher will support the collaborative vision of the Special Education Department and general education team teaching model in providing appropriate educational services to students in need of a more supportive environment while continuing to be part of the high school community.


1. Implements instructional objectives in accordance with each student’s individual schedule.

2. Implements behavioral programs that are individualized for each student and provides research-based behavioral interventions and social/emotional support to students in the program.

3. Effectively works with students who are experiencing mental health/behavioral issues in the high school setting, and effectively communicates with staff regarding these issues.

4. Utilizes de-escalation strategies with students in moments of crisis.

5. Works collaboratively with each student’s general education teacher, guidance counselor, and other related service providers.

6. Serves as case manager for students in the program.

7. Works cooperatively and in partnership with the general education staff to ensure mutual understanding of each student’s goals.

8. Provides ongoing communication to parents and other members of each student’s team regarding progress.

9. Develops and manages a schedule of teaching activities and maintains current student records.

10. Flexibly supports a number of students in multiple grades and in multiple subject areas during each class period.

11. Maintains confidentiality regarding pupil status and student records unless disclosure serves professional purposes or is required by law.

12. Utilizes technology to facilitate student learning, such as web-based educational programs, Skype, and virtual learning programs.

13. Facilitates smooth student interactions within classes.

14. Assumes all other responsibilities as might be assigned by the Building Principal/PPS Director.


1. Certification as a Special Educator at appropriate grade level

2. Documented experience with students who have significant mental health, social/emotional or behavioral needs.

3. Certification or documented training in a research based Crisis Prevention or De-escalation Program.
