The Burrillville School Department is seeking qualified, certified candidates for the position of Library Media Specialist at the Burrillville Middle School beginning the 2017-2018 school year. Please read the following job description for general responsibilities and position requirements.

Title: Library/Media Specialist

Supervisor: Building Principal

Department: School Department


The Library Media Specialist will provide leadership, instruction, and consulting assistance in the use of leading edge instruction and information technology as well as cultivate appreciation for a variety of media experiences.

The Library Media Specialist will facilitate student and staff use of diverse information resources and strategies to access, process, and apply information, helping them to make meaning of a rapidly-changing world. The Library Media Specialist will foster the development of information finding, analyzing and problem-solving skills to support investigations, encouraging users to become skilled creators of information and ideas. The Library Media Specialist will establish and coordinate efficient systems to enhance the use of information resources.


1. Collaborates with classroom teachers in the preparation, presentation, and evaluation of units or assignments which utilize information resources.

2. Assists staff and students in using knowledge meaningfully for decision making and problem solving.

3. Provides instruction for individuals and small groups within the Library/Media Center.

4. Promotes literacy and the enjoyment of reading, viewing, and listening.

5. Promotes a positive attitude and perception toward the use of technology as a learning tool.

6. Creates and implements procedures for Library/Media Center operations that may include, but are not limited to: selection, acquisition, cataloging and processing, access, student and teacher use, instruction, services, and facilities.

7. Assists in the selection, assignment, and supervision of Library/Media staff and volunteers.

8. Creates and implements procedures to promote access to Library/Media materials and equipment.

9. Provides services to students and teachers including circulation, reference, instruction, copyright information, educational technology, and reading incentive.

10. Schedules the Library/Media facilities for instruction and supervising student use.

11. Provides supplementary support for the management of the school’s computer resources (labs, materials, and network) as related to information resources, network, and e-mail accounts.

12. Assists with the creation and maintenance of the school website.

13. Models instructional strategies and coaches staff members in the use of technology with curriculum.

14. Encourages and fosters technology leadership in others.

15. Participates in district-wide meetings related to library/media functions.

16. Performs such other related duties as assigned by the building principal, or designee.


1. Certified as a Library/Media Specialist

2. Master’s Degree with emphasis in Library Resources or comparable program preferred.

3. Successful experience as a classroom teacher preferred.

4. Library /Media Specialist experience preferred.

5. Experience teaching, modeling, and coaching educational technology for both students and staff preferred.

6. Demonstrated ability to work successfully with staff and students.
