Job Description
The Burrillville school Department is seeking qualified, certified candidates for the position of School Social Worker to begin in school year 2017-2018. This position covers one primary grade school and two elementary schools. Please read the following job description for general responsibilities and qualifications.

Title: School Social Worker

Supervisor: Building Principal/PPS Director

The School Social Worker promotes and enhances the overall academic mission by providing services that strengthen home/school/community partnerships and alleviate barriers to learning. The School Social Worker significantly contributes to the development of a healthy, safe and caring environment by advancing the understanding of emotional and social development of children, including the influences of family, community and cultural differences on student’s success by implementing effective intervention strategies. The School Social Worker’s function supports the Rhode Island regulations, the vision of the Burrillville School Department and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics and School Social Work Standards.


1. Identifies and assesses academic problems through analysis of factors impinging on student adjustment including factors in the home, school and community.

2. Collaborates with school staff and other school system personnel to implement strategies that promote student learning.

3. Provides staff consultation on behavioral, emotional and environmental issues affecting student participation in the learning process.

4. Completes risk assessments on referred students.

5. Attends meetings and professional development activities as required to enhance job performance.

6. Serves as liaison between families and the school to positively promote collaborative processes in education planning for students by encouraging parent/guardian participation in the school setting.

7. Provides crisis intervention and participates in school-based crisis response team.

8. Completes social history assessments to assist in the determination of special education services.

9. Provides individual and group counseling to students.

10. Participates as a member of the IEP, SST, RtI and other school-based and district-wide teams to develop interventions for promoting students’ academic success.

11. Serves as liaison with community agencies and assists in fostering communication between schools, parents/guardian and community leaders.

12. Locates and mobilizes community resources to support the educational program.

13. Assumes all other responsibilities as might be assigned by the Building Principal/PPS Director.


1. School Social Workers must hold a Masters of Social Work (MSW) from an accredited school of social work.

2. School Social Workers hold a Licensed Clinical Social Work (LCSW) or Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW).

3. School Social Workers must receive 30 hours of approved continuing education, 3 of which must be in Professional Ethical Practice and 3 in Cross Cultural Competence. (Only six hours of the continuing education requirement may be in distance learning. The rest of the hours must be in face-to-face/other learning format that allows for participant/faculty interaction.)

4. Conceptual, interpersonal and social skills necessary for position performance.

5. Demonstrated commitment to the implementation of high standards for all students.

6. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with staff.

7. Demonstrated ability to interact successfully with parents in the support of students.

The Burrillville School Department is a public school district that serves the Town of Burrillville, located about 20 miles from Providence in northwestern Rhode Island, bordering both Connecticut and Massachusetts. Burrillville, incorporated in 1806, is a rural community comprised of nine villages spanning 57.3 square miles: Bridgeton, Glendale, Harrisville, Mapleville, Mohegan, Nasonville, Oakland, Pascoag, and Wallum Lake.

The School Department is a community of approximately 2,550 students, 235 faculty members, 87 staff, and 15 administrators, including the Superintendent of Schools. The School Department is overseen by the Burrillville School Committee, seven representative individuals elected on a rotating basis every four years by the citizens of the town.
