Job Description
Position Summary: A Bachelor’s Degree in Education, or in a relevant subject area is required. Prior substitute teaching experience is preferred. The Substitute Teacher provides student services to those students enrolled at Health Sciences Charter School on an as needed basis; ensuring the effective completion of the existing curriculum they are responsible for through lectures, discussions, class activities, demonstrations and other creative forms of education while establishing and enforcing rules for maintaining order throughout the educational process. The teacher will work collectively in a Professional Learning Community (PLC).

1. Will bring a diverse perspective when working with students, parents, colleagues, and PLC members.
2. Ability to work professionally in an urban, youth learning environment.
3. Awareness of PLC: daily participation and motivation to collaboratively improve PLC.
4. Engage in diverse community based programming with regional colleagues and healthcare providers.
5. Observe and evaluate the students’ performance, progress, behavior, social development and physical health.
6. Instruct students effectively through lectures, discussions, class activities, demonstrations and other creative forms of education of the curriculum their courses require and maintain a balance of these different educational strategies.
7. Adapt teaching methods according to what is appropriate to student’s needs and interests.
8. Establish and enforce rules of classroom conduct throughout the educational process. Enforce all administrative policies and rules governing the students.
9. Preserve accurate and complete records as required by law, district policies and administrative standards.
10. Prepare, administer and grade tests and assignments that are a reflection of what students will be evaluated on during NYS Regents, Advanced Regents and Advanced Placement testing.
11. Other duties as assigned and requested.

Job Requirements
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, electronic student management, grading, and other instructional technologies.
• Proficiency in required software packages, which includes, but is not limited to, Microsoft Outlook, Word and PowerPoint.
• Ability to convey information and ideas clearly and coherently through spoken word and writing that others will understand.
• Strong active listening abilities by giving full attention to what others are saying, taking the time to understand points others are making, asking questions as they are appropriate and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
• Strong critical thinking skills through the use of logic and reasoning to identify the strength and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to a problem.
• A strong social perspective to be aware of others reactions and perspectives and why they react and feel as they do.
• Ability to work well with other faculty and staff members.
