Mary Johnson Children’s Center Associate Teacher- Job Description
Associate Teachers at Mary Johnson Children’s Center work under the direction of the lead teacher in the planning and implementation of a developmentally appropriate program that fits with the philosophy of the Center. The associate teacher shares the responsibility for the success of the classroom with the lead teacher. Children and the Classroom The associate teacher supports the teaching team in creating a classroom environment that honors and celebrates the extraordinary capability of each child and where the talent and potential of each child is respected and nourished. The associate teacher will support the lead teacher in creating an innovative learning environment based on the principles of a negotiated curriculum, using the cycle of inquiry. The associate teacher will support the classroom goals; bring new ideas to help create a rich environment for early childhood The associate teacher shall help ensure that each child’s basic needs are met, including the need for affection, acceptance, and comfort. The associate teacher shall help organize the classroom space and equipment in a manner that is conducive to learning, wonder, exploration and discovery. The associate teacher will help to promote the cognitive, physical, intellectual and emotional safety of each child. The associate teacher shall work with the team to create meaningful assessments of children based on the philosophy of the Center. Families The associate teacher shall honor each family’s unique culture and beliefs. The associate teacher will honor the fundamentally different relationship that a family has with a child from that of the relationship that they, as teacher, have with the child. Teaching Team The associate teacher shall create a supportive, professional classroom environment for each member of the teaching team. The associate teacher will work with the teaching team to create a classroom environment that reflects the philosophy of the program. The associate teacher seeks constructive advice and critical analysis of their professional growth and performance and conveys constructive advice and critical analysis of the growth and performance of their team colleagues.
Mary Johnson Children’s Center and the Community The associate teacher will actively participate in MJCC staff and team planning meetings. The associate teacher will be an active participant in the Addison County early childhood community. The associate teacher will be an advocate for MJCC and early childhood education in the community.
Professional Development The associate teacher will develop an annual Individualized Professional Development Plan. The associate teacher will engage in research and self-study to support the emerging interests of the children and to increase their own understanding of a negotiated curriculum. The associate teacher will make regular progress in meeting the goals of the Individualized Professional Development Plan through coursework, workshops and conferences. The associate teacher shall maintain certifications or licensure. The associate teacher will have long-range educational plan that includes teacher licensure. The teacher will participate in trainings and workshops that are specifically created for the MJCC staff. The associate teacher will complete a total of 47 hours of professional training each year.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor or Associate Degree in Early Child Education or a related field, CDA or participation in the Vermont Apprenticeship Program.
