Job Description
The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for the supervision of all students within his/her assignment, is committed to the Atlantis Charter School Board of Trustees policies regarding equity, human rights and cross cultural understanding and reports directly to the Principal of the school, the Director of Student Services or his/her designee. Under the direction of the Principal, the Director of Student Services, or his/her designee and the supervision of the School Nurse, the Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for the health of the population of children in the specific school building(s) to which she/he is assigned. Under the supervision of the School Nurse, the Licensed Practical Nurse assists in providing services to the school that work toward the health and wellness of students and the improvement of health conditions in general.

TITLE: Licensed Practical Nurse

QUALIFICATIONS: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited institution
Current, valid license to practice as a licensed practical nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
Current certification in CPR and first aid from a recognized provider
Knowledgeable in the areas of Pediatric/adolescent Nursing and health counseling, mental health and crisis intervention
Strong communication skills, both written and spoken
Ability to relate well to others
Computer skills including Microsoft Applications (Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, Access, Power Point)
At least two years of related experience in child health, school setting, community health or other relevant nursing experience preferred


REPORTS TO: Principal, Director of Student Services and School Nurse

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
While actual roles and responsibilities will vary depending on individual circumstances, the Licensed Practical Nurse will generally be required to perform some or all of the following tasks. Note that this list is not all-inclusive and that the administrator may also assign other tasks he/she deems appropriate.

Essential Job Duties:

1. Maintain the highest and most appropriate health expectations of all students at all times.
2. Provide basic first aid, monitor illness and injury and notify parents of concerns.
3. Under the supervision of the School Nurse, provide direct and indirect care to students in compliance with school district policies, professional standards of practice, physician’s orders, and the Individual Health Plan.
4. Dispense medication as delegated by the School Nurse and requested by a health care provider and parent.
5. Provide staff with student health concerns and emergency information as necessary and appropriate.
6. Provide for the promotion and maintenance of health as well as the prevention of illness and injuries.
7. Aid in the removal of health-related barriers to learning and promote an optimal level of wellness for students and staff.
8. Assure Atlantis Charter School is in compliance with mandated health service activities.
9. Participate in the establishment, review, and implementation of school health services, policies and procedures.
10. Provide periodic health appraisals of students with identified or suspected health problems.
11. Conduct health screenings for the school under the direction of the School Nurse.
12. Update immunization records and enforce state immunization requirements.
13. Promote problem solving, cooperation and conflict resolution strategies.
14. Maintain up-to-date and accurate student health records.
15. Perform other related tasks as assigned.

1. Have a working knowledge of national and state legislation affecting student health services and apply this to student health operations.
2. Keep educationally and professionally informed by participating in professional organizations, coursework, workshops, conferences, and by the reading of professional literature.
3. Create and maintain a climate of respect and fairness for all students.
4. Communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, community and outside agencies to better meet the needs of students.
5. Make fair and ethical judgments.
6. Model life-long learning.
7. Work as a contributing team member.
8. Attend faculty meetings and professional development sessions.
9. Dress in appropriate attire as indicative of healthcare professionals (scrubs, nursing uniform).
10. Provide students with an appropriate role model.
11. Be receptive to suggestions for growth and improvement
12. Be available to parents and students during and outside school hours.
13. Openly support and abide by all school policies and procedures.
14. Secure the cooperation and respect of students, faculty and staff.

EVALUATION

A formal and/or informal performance evaluation of the Licensed Practical Nurse will be conducted each year by the Principal and the Director of Student Services. The Executive Director will evaluate all new employees, any employee referred by the Principal, as well as any employee who requests an evaluation by the Executive Director. The Executive Director may conduct as many as five formal or informal evaluations of any employee.

Atlantis Charter School is located in Fall River, MA, which is approximately 50 miles south of Boston in the south eastern region of Massachusetts. The school occupies two separate sites located less than one mile apart. The Lower School, serving approximately 420 students in Kindergarten through Grade 4, is located at 2501 South Main Street. The Upper School, serving approximately 280 students in Grades 5 through 8, is located at 37 Park Street. Both locations have access to park or playground facilities, and overlook the Taunton River.

Job Requirements
This position is at the elementary school, grades K-4. The hours are Mon - Fri, 7:45am - 3:30pm.
