The Quabbin Regional High School Transition Program is designed for students in grades 9-12 who in the Team’s opinion have the potential to eventually be successful in a less restrictive placement. Students served have a diagnosed emotional disability that adversely affects educational performance. Students demonstrate average to above average intelligence and may have delays in their age/grade academic levels due to the effects of their emotional disability.
The Transition Class program’s philosophy and thus its name, is to successfully build students' skills so that they can eventually “transition” into the regular education classroom setting. Although the program has the capacity to provide services within a self-contained setting, the goal is to promote inclusion into regular education. The program, through a therapeutic approach, strives to foster greater independence and responsibility in students to prepare them for future academic, vocational, social, and emotional challenges.
Students will participate in regular education classes to the maximum extent possible. When participation in a regular education environment is determined to be inappropriate, they will be supported by individualized small group instruction. The intent is to keep the student current with the courses in which they are enrolled while they reestablish the coping skills necessary for inclusion. The educational component will be delivered in a therapeutic manner combined with counseling services as indicated in the student’s IEP.
Although the program allows for a maximum of 12 students, effort will be made to keep enrollment at 8 or less in order to provide an optimum student/teacher ratio. The Transition Class teacher will work as a team member with the School Adjustment Counselor/Social Worker, instructional aides and grade level teachers to provide students with a highly supportive educational program.
Must be certified Mod Special Needs 9-12 Previous experience with special education and students with emotional impairments preferred.
