Scope of Responsibility The School Nurse is responsible for the supervision of all students within his/her assignment, is committed to the Atlantis Charter School Board of Trustees policies regarding equity, human rights and cross cultural understanding and reports directly to the Principal of the school, the Director of Student Services or his/her designee. Under the direction of the Principal and the Director of Student Services or his/her designee, the School Nurse is responsible for the health of the population of children in the specific school building(s) to which she/he is assigned and in this role, the nurse serves as clinical expert, service provider, and health program manager in the educational setting. ________________________________________ TITLE: School Nurse
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s or Master’s of Science degree in nursing from an accredited institution Current, valid license to practice as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Current certification in CPR and first aid from a recognized provider Knowledgeable in the areas of Pediatric/adolescent Nursing and health counseling, mental health and crisis intervention Strong communication skills, both written and spoken Ability to relate well to others Computer skills including Microsoft Applications (Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, Access, Power Point) Valid Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education licensure in Nursing preferred At least two years of related experience in child health, community health or other relevant nursing experience preferred
REPORTS TO: Principal and Director of Student Services
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: While actual roles and responsibilities will vary depending on individual circumstances, the School Nurse will generally be required to perform some or all of the following tasks. Note that this list is not all-inclusive and that the administrator may also assign other tasks he/she deems appropriate.
Administration, Management and Supervision:
1. Maintain the highest and most appropriate health expectations of all students at all times. 2. Continuously monitor student health and make appropriate modifications to meet students’ needs. 3. Responsible for direct and indirect care given to students in compliance with school district policies, professional standards of practice, physician’s orders, and the Individual Health Plan. 4. Provide for the promotion and maintenance of health as well as the prevention of illness and injuries. 5. Facilitate the removal of health-related barriers to learning and promote an optimal level of wellness for students and staff. 6. Assure Atlantis Charter School is in compliance with mandated health service activities. 7. Coordinate and participate in the establishment, review, and implementation of school health services, policies and procedures. 8. Assure that such policies and related procedures adhere to legal and regulatory requirements and ethical standards of nursing practice. 9. Develop and coordinate quality improvement activities for the school health service component of the school health program. 10. Implement communicable disease control in the school, including monitoring, surveillance and participating in disease prevention and outbreak management within the school. 11. Coordinate the establishment of guidelines, procedures and training in First Aid/CPR/First Responder Program for schools and staff. 12. Participate in development of the school’s emergency health and crises plan. 13. Where applicable, direct, monitor and evaluate aides, assistants, volunteers, unlicensed and/or licensed personnel assigned to the school health program. 14. Implement a system for the identification of students with chronic/acute health care needs. 15. Work in collaboration with Director of Student Services and medical providers to coordinate health services for children with Special Needs. 16. Provide training for staff regarding chronic illnesses experienced by students at school. 17. Provide staff with student health concerns and emergency information as necessary and appropriate. 18. Function as a health resource for chronically ill students and their families. 19. Provide consultation to members of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team or other multidisciplinary team on health related concerns. 20. Provide consultation and recommendations in the planning and development of health accommodation plans for Section 504 eligible students. 21. Determine tasks that may be appropriately delegated to licensed or unlicensed persons, on a student by student basis, and the provision of training for these people for these tasks. 22. Provide on going supervision and evaluation of delegated staff to assure the safe and effective performance of delegated tasks. 23. Provide periodic health appraisals of students with identified or suspected health problems. 24. Coordinate screening programs and immunization review/follow up for the school. 25. Collaborate with other student services personnel to prevent health problems from becoming reasons for educational failure. 26. Seek out local and other resources for use in the school setting. 27. Participate with other school personnel in developing workshops for teachers, assistants and other staff on health-related topics. 28. Provide an environment conducive to healthy living. 29. Promote problem solving, cooperation and conflict resolution strategies. 30. Maintain up-to-date and accurate student health records.
Professionalism: 1. Have a working knowledge of national and state legislation affecting student health services and apply this to student health operations. 2. Keep educationally and professionally informed by participating in professional organizations, coursework, workshops, conferences, and by the reading of professional literature. 3. Create and maintain a climate of respect and fairness for all students. 4. Communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, community and outside agencies to better meet the needs of students. 5. Make fair and ethical judgments. 6. Model life-long learning. 7. Work as a contributing team member. 8. Attend faculty meetings and professional development sessions. 9. Dress in appropriate attire as indicative of healthcare professionals (scrubs, nursing uniform). 10. Provide students with an appropriate role model. 11. Be receptive to suggestions for growth improvement 12. Be available to parents and students during and outside school hours. 13. Openly support and abide by all school policies and procedures. 14. Secure the cooperation and respect of students, faculty and staff.
EVALUATION
A formal and/or informal performance evaluation of the School Nurse will be conducted each year by the Principal and the Director of Student Services.

The substitute School Nurse will provide coverage for School Nurse on an as needed basis. This is a per diem position and there is no guarantee of work from one day to the next. There are also no benefits associated with the position. Experience working in a school or education setting strongly preferred.
