The School Board is seeking an experienced educator who is eager to lead an outstanding district in a community that values high performance in its school system. The individual we seek will possess leadership, management and inter-personal skills and meet the superintendent certification requirements for the State of Maine.

District and community stakeholders have identified the following as essential elements in leading the Falmouth schools:

• A skilled communicator and consensus builder who will work collaboratively to mentor and develop a strong leadership team while maintaining a positive atmosphere of mutual trust and respect throughout the community;

• A highly visible and accessible educator who will create excitement, enthusiasm and a spirit of innovation among the district’s professionals;

• A highly organized hands-on administrator who is knowledgeable in all facets of a district including long-range planning, fiscal management, labor relations and experience with building and construction projects; and

• A child-centered educator who, while recognizing the importance of test scores, will advocate for appropriate educational programs to develop well-rounded and creative thinkers.

The Falmouth School Board will review candidate applications and select several candidates for interviews in January 2010. The interview committee, which will make finalist recommendations to the Board, will consist of a small team of School Board, district and community members who will adhere to a confidential process. The School Board and the Consultant will have access to the complete set of application materials. The interview committee will receive only summative information.

Finalists will be invited to return to the district, at the district’s expense, to meet with stakeholder groups after which time the School Board may elect to conduct site visits. The Board intends to select the superintendent no later than March 1, 2010.

Welcome to Falmouth Public Schools!

With a population of 11,000, Falmouth is located on beautiful Casco Bay immediately north of Portland, Maine’s largest city. It covers approximately 32 square miles from the coastline to rural areas further inland. Falmouth is a residential community, an hour’s drive from Portsmouth, N.H., two hours from Boston and less than three hours from Maine’s premier skiing.

Attractions in Falmouth include the local harbor and town landing, indoor and outdoor ice-skating facilities, three golf courses, and a medical center. In the Greater Portland area, there is an active arts community including the Portland Art Museum, the Portland Symphony, and numerous theater companies, as well as cinemas, shopping, and many parks and recreational facilities.

For additional information about the Town of Falmouth, visit www.falmouth.town.me.us.

Falmouth's school district, with a student population of 2,100-plus, is ranked as one of the best in Maine, with the Town providing all services for K-12. All Falmouth schools made Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) in 2008.

Recent honors for our schools include:

•Plummer-Motz School, 2005 Blue Ribbon School
•Falmouth High School, US News & World Report, American’s Best High School, Silver Medal Winner 2008
•Falmouth Middle School, 2008 Blue Ribbon School

Falmouth is proud to have this year’s Maine Teacher of the Year teaching at Lunt School, last year’s Maine Principal of the Year at Falmouth High School, last year’s Maine Music Educator of the year at Falmouth Middle School and last year's Maine Special Education educator at Falmouth High School.

Falmouth currently operates two elementary schools—Lunt School for grades K through 2 with approximately 406 students and Plummer-Motz School for grades 3 and 4 with approximately 318 students. After three years of growth and change, RTI is fully implemented in reading for Grades K to 4 and the two schools are now focusing attention to the implementation of the RTI process in mathematics. Beginning this academic year, 2009-2010, Falmouth offered a 2.5-day per week kindergarten program (two sessions are offered) rather than the traditional half-day, five day per week program.

Falmouth has a grade 5 through 8 middle school, of a little over 700 students, who are served by a resource room and ed tech for each grade as well as a gifted and talented program, a vibrant unified arts program and for about 50 students per grade, honors level math. Student Centered Teams at each grade level use data and observations to monitor individual student progress (academically, socially and emotionally). This structure is now being refined with RTI processes in literacy, math and behavior.

Falmouth High School serves approximately 700 students in grades 9 through 12. The high school strives to meet the needs of all learners by providing a wide array of opportunities including advanced (AP) courses, a vocational program, on-line courses and internships in the community. Students are supported in their studies through before/after-school teacher assistance, learning labs, guided studies and a tutoring center. Service learning is an increasingly important aspect of the Falmouth High School experience with many students involved locally, nationally and internationally. Ninety-six percent of the class of 2009 planned to attend a two- or four-year college and all graduates leave FHS with a post-secondary plan.

Falmouth schools have an exceptional administrative, teaching and support staff. Full-time principals and assistant principals lead both the high and middle schools. All of Falmouth's professional teaching staff is highly qualified and we are proud of our 26 National Board Certified teachers. Sixty-five percent of the teaching staff at Falmouth High School holds Masters degrees or higher.

Falmouth anticipates the opening of a new $46 million pre-K through grade 5 elementary school in 2011 on the same campus with the middle and high schools. It will replace two existing elementary schools, Lunt and Plummer-Motz, whose buildings and land will revert to the Town. This $46-million project is supported primarily with state construction funds, with the Falmouth voters having shown overwhelming support for local fund expenditures of $5.9 million to cover sustainability features and athletic field improvements on the campus, including a synthetic turf
stadium field.

The new elementary school is designed to accommodate both pre-kindergarten and full-day kindergarten programs, neither of which is currently offered. The school will be built with energy efficiency and sustainability in mind. Features include a wood chip boiler (which will heat both the high school and elementary school), green roofs, geo-thermal for interior spaces used year-round, solar hot water, and more.
