Are you feeling frustrated by the focus on testing?

Susan Engle’s recent Op Ed piece in the New York Times made me nod in agreement. Those of us who spend our days with elementary school children know that we are doing so much more than “preparing them for high school.”  She writes that the focus on testing and the drive to raise scores hurts children by ignoring what we know about how children learn. We educators need to adjust the curriculum so that it is developmentally appropriate. This rings true for me and I shudder to think about the “focus on the test” mentality that I hear so much about.
